February to May 2024

Part 1… Introduction/my short life story

In High school , I was very active, involved in journalism, photography chess club, and I was the sport editor and layout designer for my high school newspaper, also the I was involved in the Drama club, and chess team .… But because of the budget cuts, I am a high school drop out… I wrote an article in my high school newspaper about it… not a drop out a push out…

Part 2 …Professional career and teaching

I stared in the HVAC trade age 16, servicing Ice machines with my dad on weekends and summer brake… I first attended a county educational program (CCOC), the teachers where mediocre and the program sub-par, but I learned something, and met great people.…

Then I attended San Jose City College, where I was very fortune for having excellent instructors, who where highly intelligent, and I contribute my success to them, Professor Norman Christopherson, and Professor Keiron Conley, They are a major contribute to my successes, thanks to  Keiron (we had many conversation at the college cafeteria, he thought highly of me) I became a better instructor because of him.

I first started as a helper, and with in a couple of yeas i was a full service technician. I was a difficult dealing with customers due to my young age, (you don’t usually see service technicians at age 19… m father retired in 2006, i renamed the business Mr. Freeze Refrigeration co. and expanded to 3 trucks, eventually closed it in 2018

Teaching … Early 2012,&the day after-my 49ers lost the SB) A new customer called me (Kurt), we are still friends, he told me he learned more in 2 hours on the roof from me then 6 month at school.. So Kurt introduced me to IBT in Santa Clara that he was attending and I was hired as instructor, Jon my new boss also teaches at SJCC,  told me (Robby, Mr. Conley spoke highly of you)

After 5 schools I was involved with private for profit trade schools… I realized that they are after profit and not education.. The last school in Modesto CA, a teacher told me: “Robby, I was never a service technician, I did Sheet metal, I don’t know how to use the volt meter or manifold gauges, I am not qualified to teach HVAC”

Las Vegas HVAC educators conference… A conformance for HVAC educators where we learn new methods and new technology to include in our lesson plans

The first year I attended, I failed (78% score, 80% to pass) a test that i did not prepare for (78% score, 80% to pass), i completed in about 40 minutes while other teachers have not finished, makes me wonder if i studied i should be able to pass all the test to become Certified Master HVACR Educator (CMHE)

Due to COVID The second conformance was online where i learned to became a better online instructor.

The third conformance, I met instructors form the University of Southern Nevada, a couple of month latter the HVAC department provided me one two night and s plane tickets for an interview, I made a great impression on them but they went ahead with a more experienced teacher, I also Met Mr. Bill from Dunwoody College of technology in Minneapolis They also offerd me a job, but i cannot live in Minnesota (too cold) , we are still friend, Mr. bill and I..

Part 3… Florida and Easy Ice

The 3 companies t I worked in Florida where not up to my  slandered of professionalism  and  technical knowledge. And none of my bosses are qualified to mange, the first company was taking advantage of its costumers , I don’t want to be part of a dishonest company, another company the techs have no idea what to do, I never seen so many defrost timers miss wired and fan cycling controls not installed, and another company don’s use a vacuum pump, so many restrictions…

My wife will not let me get a job anymore, she said, I am too smart to work for anyone but myself,  and she is correct, my Costumers, my teachers, and my students tell me that too..

Then I found Easy Ice, I felt that I was in Heaven, A warehouse full of ice machines,  finally I found a company that will challenge me, a company that I will learn from, and grow my knowledge of ice machines. But, nothing what it seams.. , nothing by empty lies and sweet talk and sugar on top, that’s why I’m writing this story,

Part 4…before week one Orlando

Before week one, I first interview for the technical support job with Miss Tracy Andersen, I am qualified to be a technical support specialists because of my experience as a service technician, I did not get the job,   I lost by one vote, so I decided to join the Orlando team as a service tech and trainer, because I was perfect fit with Easy Ice, I was very exited , but it was  a disappointment, because they have no idea how to maintain Ice machines, and how to Run a service company, and that’s my story

Part 4b… Orlando
The boss Zack put me I an  hotel, I was exited I finally a company that specializes in ice machine, that’s my passion, I felt I was in heaven when I walked into the Orlando warehouse, but I was very disappointments after seeing the operation they are running.

I met Mr. Brian, very nice gentleman, but again I found myself with unqualified co workers.

This company have no idea how to maintained ice machines (Mr. Brian), because the Warehouse people have no idea how prepare (refurbish Ice machines)

I had an argument with Zack because Mr. Brian was using Number 2 Brazing tip, and for small pipe we need number 0, I told them both that Number 0 is the proper size and every students know that, I thought to myself that they will burn the plastic in the evaporators, and latter I found that very evaporator is burnt…

Sometimes during the week Mr Brian had me trouble shoot a machine that trips the breaker as soon as power is on, its very unusual because ice machines had a delay before the major load energizes, his DVM meter had no resistance setting on it, only continuity..  I should have brought my own tools…  I told him how can troubleshoot the controls and the loads without the proper tool?, What he told me was shocking… “replace random parts until the problem is fixed..

another issue was that the vacuum machines was not vacuuming properly, it was very slow, and by EPA slandered, dry nitrogen leak check should be 48 hours), Mr. Brian never did that, That is unacceptable by my professionalism, that is not what I teach…

I saw issues with another a machine that need to adjust the ice thickness a little thicker and I told Mr. Brain that the ice is braking a little too thin and the curtain stays open because the ice is not a full sheet and one cube get stuck.. He said its ok, don’t touch… I could not believe it.. So many service calls I had because of this ice bridge too thin, and later I wasted my time and company money on service call adjusting the ice thickness control

Thai’s the man I’m suppose to call for technical support? Another smooth taker who is doesn’t know what he is doing

Part 5….Jose part 1. service manager (smooth talker)

I finally met the service mange Jose,  he had me go with him to a job about 2.5 hours away to find a refrigerant leak, a young technician doing maintenance saw oil everywhere and assumed that the machine leaking refrigerant…, Jose was convinced its the hot gas solenoid valve  leaking because oil on it, I informed him, that oil is from the grill (grease) not POE oil, he was going to replace the valve anyways, so I told him we should not open the system unless we really have to, so we recovered all the refrigerant using a scale and it was exactly as the name plate, we had no leak, nothing wrong with the machine,I told him don’t blame the young tech, I made the same mistake when I was new… I wonder why didn’t Jose didn’t have him watch one cycle and we didn’t have to waist so much time…

Second call was an intermittent problem where sometimes the fuse blows, I helped him trouble shoot to check the fuse holder connection and the circulating wash valve switch connection, and we had a loose wire next to the fuse, This will never happened in my company because easy ice PM do not include checking on the electrical system. That job took foe ever because Jose ran 3 cycles which was unnecessary, and another technician showed up, wasting company money

Jose also told me that family comes first and if I need time off, anytime, which saw a lie o be explained in a later chapter

Part 6… Lies Lies and more Lies

So I found my self driving a big construction vehicle (it not set up for service), and wasting gas, no company card, and a promise of  a proper vehicle soon,  nothing but lies… Mr. Zack informed me only one or 3 week I get my service van, but 4 months latter, still no proper vehicle. I even had to get my own ladder because it took Zack a while to get me a step ladder and I paid or arts out of my own money

The company Van is the most important tool, with a proper van the technician can do his job properly.

Part 7…Tampa bay team
I was very exited to meet my Tampa team, but again it was very disappointment because they where not up to my standards .. I was promise to mentor and my team was an older gentleman (Kevin) and an Idiot (jay).. I have the highest respect for Mr. Kevin, he is wonderful person, but I his not motivated to learn the trade, I tried my best to help him, I gave him all my booklets that I wrote and shared my knowledge about HVAC and ice machines, but I didn’t think he really wants to learn … I told my bosses, but they don’t give the damn, I sent emails to him and my bosses, Zack and Jose, and hey both told me to forget about it…
It was very hard for me to watch someone (Kevin) telling how to maintain ice machines when he been on the job for 3 years, and I been doing this for 30 years
I was very disappointed, I thought I will improve my knowledge, and learn from the experts, how stupid I was, thinking I will learn from them, I am the one should be teaching them, they have no idea how to maintain ice machines, and how to schedule maintenance, and the proper install

I’m ready at 7am, Kevin said to meet him at 830am at the storage, no show until 9am, Kevin told me we don’t go by the time on the service calls unless dispatcher tells you if is a must start time… A lot of wasting time..
We did a great job servicing I think we did 6 or 7 calls in one day, but a lot of call-backs because of Jay, a lot of minor mistakes causing the company time and labor and parts, Jose instructed me to inform every time I fixed after Jay.

Part 8 customers

a… Ana maria island: multiple costumers and dispatch send me on Mondays when most of the restaurant closed, I must have at least 4 or 5 times drove hour an hour and half one way for nothing…The Hot dog restaurant, the ice machine is not installed properly and leaks water every time we wash it the manger told me because the drain is too small, its ok during freeze mode because not mush water lest at the end of the cycle, but during clawing we have a lot of water. Evey single machine with easy icet he drain is not installed properly

b… Whisky wings machine was not refurbished properly, and a lot of dirt came out from it, between Kevin and I we must have waisted at 22 hours, finally Kevin Replaced the check valve spring, (a 5 dollars part)

c. Mission house drain is not installed correctry , I told Kevin as we where installing it, and he did it as per easy ice instruction and easy ice followed the factory installation but the factory installations not correct, my father figured it log time ago. Then l4 mohth latter it was stopped working because it was dirty do to the long drain and it took me for ever to clean it because of slow drainage, then latter Kvin had the drain clogged.. The combination of the wrong filtration, downtown, and drainage, it failed less then 4 month

d…One eye jack poker ice machine was not working properly because at night it doesn’t work, after 5 technicians and replacing the machine, I figured it out. The electrical was not installed properly because the braker was not a 220v, they where 2 singles marked as spare, I brought it up to code by writing the barker number on he receptacle and on the braker, that day I repaired 5 machines hat dayand all of them the was the cause of bad instillation

e..Golf clubs, one machine Kevin and I had to fix 3 times because of bad refurbish and the filtration system is not the correct, I had green water in my  plastic cup

e…. White  dove (got me fired), Jose made me do PM at 9 pm and denied my time off that week because my are moving, I had a Uhall rental at 7am the next day, What ever happened to family comes first… that machine was beyond dirty, and I figured it out and I wrote  long email how to fix it because I had that problem before in the late 90’s before
